On August 17, after bulldozers and excavators had spent several days plowing their way through pristine native vegetation and wildlife habitat along the Rio Grande in Big Bend National Park, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced it was pausing construction in the park.
The pause was the result of massive bipartisan backlash, widespread national media coverage, and general outrage about the blatant desecration of an actual National Park—destruction for which, according to local sheriffs and judges, there was/is absolutely no reason whatsoever.
Pursuant to a federal court order, that pause was later extended through September 30.
