Every Democratic member of the Texas congressional delegation has joined seven former Big Bend National Park leaders in calling for the Trump administration to halt plans to construct border security infrastructure within the national park in far West Texas.
Eighteen members of Congress — Texas’ 13 U.S. House members and five representatives from California, Illinois, North Carolina and Virginia — objected to the Department of Homeland Security’s June 9 decision to waive more than two dozen environmental and historic preservation laws, including the Endangered Species Act, to expedite border security construction inside the park. The officials’ June 16 letter contrasted recent decisions by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin with earlier commitments from U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott.
