On Tuesday, June 9, the Trump administration confirmed it will build 17 miles of metal barriers that will pass through Texas’s Big Bend National Park. The announcement came a day after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) waived dozens of environmental laws to speed construction of border barriers and roads through both Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park.
The border wall system, funded by the U.S. government’s highly impactful One Big Beautiful Bill Act, is under the accelerated construction schedule for expansion and completion of the main physical barrier by late 2027. Park advocacy groups are now sounding the alarm, stating that these additional security measures make “no border security or financial sense.”
